ANNA FLORES: SAMO YOUTH INTERN

Anna Flores, SAMO Youth Intern #ClassOf2020. Read on to learn about her experiences.

"I started out in SAMO Youth in the summer of 2020. When I began at the park, I was interning as a Spanish Communications Assistant, then I moved into the Interpretation division as a Park Guide Intern and eventually as a Generalist Intern. Through the various positions that I have held at the park, I’ve learned the importance of teamwork and clear communication, how to research and create fun, educational programs in the form of guided hikes. I learned practical skills such as how to use power tools and so much more.

I have had great mentors and peers who have helped me recognize my strengths and weaknesses and have positively nudged me to become a better team member and steward to this park. Every day brings a new opportunity to grow and I’m excited to bring the life lasting skills I’ve learned here to other parks and opportunities later on.

For those who have an interest in SAMO Youth, I say go for it! I never considered the National Park Service as a career path, and now the Santa Monica Mountains will forever have a special place in my heart. SAMO Youth provides a safe place to learn of park service careers, learn practical skills and form great relationships with mentors, all underneath the California sun!"
