Rewilding California project reaches halfway milestone!

This summer, the largest ever restoration project in the Santa Monica Mountains reached a milestone. The Rewilding Santa Monica Mountains project plans to plant a total of 100,000 plants at 5 locations before the end of 2023. In July, the award-winning actress and philanthropist, Jane Seymour, planted the 50,000th plant, a native oak tree marking the halfway point of this project.

So far, over 2,000 volunteers have given over 4,600 hours to replant areas devastated by the Springs fire in 2013 and the Woolsey fire in 2018. Grasses, herbs, shrubs and trees were planted at Rancho Sierra Vista, Paramount Ranch, Cheeseboro Canyon, and Peter Strauss Ranch between October 2021 and July 2022.

The project is funded by Rewild, Snap Inc. Santa Monica Mountains Fund has managed the staffing in partnership with the National Park Service. The Open Hearts Foundation has been instrumental in engaging volunteers and community outreach.
