Meet the Fund's student volunteer, Nicole

What do you get when you cross a communications student with a passion for conservation? Someone who wants spend her life writing and talking about saving the environment. My name is Nicole, and you guessed it, I’m that student. My passion for getting the word out about protecting our earth is what led me to get in contact with the Santa Monica Mountains Fund and become a volunteer here. I’ve been coming into the office each week for over a month now, and it’s been such a fun and educational experience.

As SAMO Fund’s go-to social media person, I get to draft the Facebook posts and tweets that you see on our profiles each day. I also get to help out with events, write articles, create promotional flyers, complete lots of research, and do whatever else is needed to help SAMO Fund share their message.

In a typical day here at the office, I come in at 9AM and work until 3PM (or later if I’m helping with an event.) I start by crafting the social media posts for the day and then jump on whatever else needs to be done, whether that’s the establishment of a new web page or researching stats on best practices for nonprofits and social media. At the end of the day, I always leave feeling satisfied. I’m helping SAMO FUND raise money that supports the preservation of our beautiful Santa Monica Mountains. This may not be as high profile or glamorous as working with advertising or a TV production agency, but for me, it’s so much more important. SAMO fund has created an excellent launching point for me to begin a career in environmental communications, and I look forward to the coming months doing what I love here.
