Backbone Trail Dedication

The newly-completed Backbone Trail was inaugurated as a National Recreation Trail on Saturday June 4th.  It was great to see over 300 people celebrating 40 years of public, private and corporate donations as well as the activism of hundreds of people that have led to the completion of this wonderful trail.

Former State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Betty Weider, who donated the final two parcels of land for the trail, helped with the grand opening along with many other elected officials who have been so supportive over the years.

The Backbone Trail is 67 miles long and connects Will Rogers State Historical Park in Los Angeles to Pt Mugu at the western end of the mountains.  This challenging trail offers vistas of cities, the ocean and rocky outcrops.  It introduces hikers to the incredible range of landscapes and habitats that characterize these mountains as it winds its way through these hills.
