Coloring Book Launch & Ice Cream Social; #ExploreSAMO

On September 7, 2024 SAMO Fund officially launched our Coloring Book! Filled with educational activities and plenty of room for creativity, kids (and parents) made their way to our Ice Cream Social to get the first taste. Along with the brand new coloring books that are offered in both English and Spanish, the Ice Cream Social had a collection of educational booths relating to native plants and wildlife!

SAMO Youth and California Naturalist Alumni, Alec Zapata alongside SAMO Youth Alumni, Jaquelin Muniz present a hands-on activity displaying the harm of rodenticides to local wildlife. The activity showcased how rodenticides are passed through the food chain, turning it into a “poison chain” across multiple animal species moving up the food web.

Zapata offered up alternatives to using rodenticides/ rat poison while also handing out SAMO Fund ‘Break the Poison Chain’ lawn signs for anyone interested in sharing the new lessons they learned!

and don’t forget about the ice cream! SAMO Fund also offered a milkweed giveaway, silent auction, and an exclusive look into our ongoing Photo Competition! Thank you to everyone who challenged the heat wave and spent a sweaty morning with us at King Gillette Ranch. Special thanks to Victoria Sixtos of FacePaint & Fairytales for bringing all of our favorite local critters to life!

National Park Service Park Guide Jazmin Ramsey shared information about local wildlife with the fun addition of animal pelts! Ramsey offered fun facts about the animals and supplied a Junior Ranger activity book for kids to earn their Junior Park Ranger badge!

National Park Service Biologist Cathy Schoonmaker along with current intern and SAMO Youth Alumni Natalie Sanchez built a model of the Wallis-Annenberg Wildlife Crossing that is currently being constructed over the 101 Freeway at Liberty Canyon. Guests were very excited to see the replica of the crossing, especially with the addition of local plants and wildlife to showcase the exciting future the crossing holds.
