Starting in April, the next step in the construction of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing will begin. This is a major milestone in keeping safe the cougars that call the Santa Monica Mountains home. We’re excited that the wildlife crossing project has reached this important step in its progress, but we know that there will be a few inconveniences for motorists as the construction progresses. For this, we want to thank you for your patience and urge you to look to the future, when the crossing construction is finished and this beautiful bridge can serve as a safe and vital link to the other side of this 6-lane highway. Not only will the crossing keep animals like mountain lions and coyotes safe as they seek to span the traffic, but it will also give mating animals access to a more diverse gene pool, creating a healthier and more resilient population.

What to expect:

To enable crews to safely lift and place large concrete beams above the freeway lanes, the California Department of Transportation plans for full overnight closures on U.S. Highway 101 in Agoura Hills between Liberty Canyon Road and Chesebro Road beginning at 11:59 p.m. Monday through Friday. Lanes will open by 5 a.m. the next morning, except for Saturdays, when it can be expected to open a little later. Closures are set to begin on April 16th but are subject to change.
