Trail Bridges

Trail Bridges Ensure Safe Access For All

In partnership with the National Park Service, SAMO Fund builds bridges that restore vital trail connections, improve public safety, and protect the natural environment. Projects like these reflect our dedication to accessible, resilient experiences in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Cheeseboro Canyon Trail Bridge

In 2025, SAMO Fund and NPS constructed a 63-foot accessible pedestrian bridge over a seasonal creek in the Cheeseboro/Palo Comado Canyon area. This bridge completes a 1.1-mile universal access trail, linking two accessible trailheads. It now serves over 200,000 visitors annually, making the canyon safer and more inclusive for hikers of all abilities.

Zuma Canyon Trail Bridge

In 2022, SAMO Fund and NPS rebuilt the Zuma Canyon Bridge on the Backbone Trail after the original was destroyed in the 2018 Woolsey Fire. That loss forced trail users—including older adults, families, and cyclists—through a risky creek-bed detour that also caused erosion and habitat damage. The new bridge restored safe, direct passage across fire-impacted terrain, while preserving the fragile riparian ecosystem it spans.
