Together, We're Making a Difference!
The Santa Monica Mountains Fund was able to make this valuable donation to the NPS thanks to the many of you who have made designated contributions to wildlife program over the years. The funds will be used to pay the salaries of wildlife biologists and vehicles.
While the Fund routinely purchases tracking collars and cameras for the park, this year's support includes an outright grant of funds. Without this, it is impossible for the NPS to maintain their wildlife tracking program in the Santa Monica Mountains.
The wildlife program tracks and observes the mountain lions, bobcats and coyotes in the Santa Monica Mountains to better understand their wellbeing and behavior in this landscape that is isolated by freeways and urban development. By understanding the behavior of these animals in this environment, the National Park Service can work to protect these species. The best way to do this is to improve connectivity and wildlife corridors. NPS research has been used over the years to support the case for the construction of a wildlife crossing over the 101 freeway at Liberty Canyon.
